Nedbank Cup Report: Jomo Cosmos v AmaZulu 08 March 2016

Nedbank Cup Last 32

Result: Jomo Cosmos 1 (3)-(2) 1 AmaZulu

Date: 08 March 2016

Venue: Olen Park

Jomo Cosmos secured their spot in the next round of the Nedbank Cup, after defeating AmaZulu 3-2 on penalties at Olen Park.

The match started on a rather conservative note as the two sides tried to avoid conceding an early goal.

The tempo did pick up the match progressed with the home side beginning to show signs of dominance as the halfway stages of the first stanza approached.

Ezenkosi were finally rewarded with a lovely strike from Denver Mukamba, putting them 1-0 ahead as they continued to look good on attack.

The hosts continued to push forward but Usuthu were doing well to break down play in the middle of the park and the sides had to settle for a 1-0 half-time score.

The visitors came out a motivated outfit as they pushed forward in search of the equaliser. It did not take too long for the Durban side to get back at level pegging, as Allan Mukuka grabbed the equaliser, 1-1.

The visitors were looking the better side in the second stanza, but the hosts were doing well to keep the scores level.

Mame Niang almost sneaked one in right at the death as the target-man's free-kick deceived the keeper and almost crossed the line but the player did well to clear the ball on the line.

The score remained level at 1-1 at the end of the 90 minutes, as the game was forced into extra-time at Olen Park.

Extra-time was a heated affair with Niang receiving his marching orders around the 109th minute.

Neither side could add to their tally during this period, however, as the two midfields battled well in the centre of the park.

However, Alan Robertson was the unlucky player to miss the deciding penalty for Usuthu as Cosmos claimed a 3-2 penalty shoot-out victory to progress to the next round.

Here is how they lined up:

Cosmos: Modiba, Nsabiyumva, Mthembu, Jampies, Macuphu, Msomi, Mntambo, Mukamba, Mashumba, Lingwati, Makobela.

AmaZulu: Stephens, Hadebe, van Heerden, Robertson, T. Dlamini, Cezu, Bhengu, Mukuka, Niang, Hlongwa, Dlamini.
