Nedbank Cup Last 32 Result: Cape Town City 2-0 SuperSport United Date: 26 January 2019 Venue: Cape Town Stadium Cape Town advanced to the last 16 of the Nedbank Cup with a 2-0 victory over SuperSport United at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday evening.
This was the fourth meeting between these two sides this season, with the Citizens winning the previous three after two wins in the Absa Premiership and MTN8 final triumph. SuperSport enjoyed a lot of the possession in the early stages, although they were restricted to efforts from distance, none of which troubled Peter Leeuwenburgh. Matthew Rusike went close to breaking the deadlock for the Citizens on 30 minutes, but his glancing header sailed wide of the upright. The home side were not to be denied four minutes later as Thato Mokeke netted his first of the campaign for City with a close-range header. Ten minutes into the second half, City extended their lead as Ayanda Patosi showed great skill to tee up Thamsanqa Mkhize, who found the back of the net with a deflected effort. SuperSport did have chances to bring themselves level after the hour mark, as Aubrey Modiba and Bradley Grobler squandered big chances on the box. Dean Furman went close to reducing the deficit in the 79th minute with a left-footed strike from distance that sailed just wide of the upright. That proved to be SuperSport's final clear-cut opening at City's goal, as the hosts saw out the remaining stages with relative ease to advance to the round of 16.
