Manchester United Transfer Plans: 13 Players Who Could Leave

With Manchester United expected to get rid of a few of their underperforming stars in a much-needed squad revamp, as many as 13 players, including Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez, could end up on the club's axe list.

Football experts Gabrielle Marcotti and Mark Odgen recently assessed the Red Devils' current squad, and gave their verdict on which players Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could let go after this season.

United's season has gone sour and their top four hopes hang in the balance after they lost 2-0 to Manchester City in the Manchester derby on Wednesday night. The defeat to City was United's seventh in their past nine games, which has cast doubt over the future of several of the club's stars.

Pogba is dividing opinion as to whether a new team should be built around the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner or if he should be sold in order to have a fresh start. Marcotti and Odgen also could not 100% agree on this, but both indicated that United should seriously consider selling him if an offer higher than €150 million (R2.4 billion) or a cash-plus-player bid arrives.

Anthony Martial should be sold if they receive an offer of at least €70 million (R1.1 billion), while Alexis Sanchez should also be on the club's axe list even though his high wages may make it difficult to sell him.

Marcotti and Odgen agreed that United have the biggest need for change at the back, suggesting that the likes of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Marcos Rojo should be sold, while the expiring contracts of Matteo Darmian and Antonio Valencia should not be extended.

In addition, Ander Herrera, who has been heavily linked with Paris Saint-Germain, and Juan Mata should also be let go when their contracts expire at the end of the season in order to free up some funds on the club's wage bill.

Third-choice goalkeeper Lee Grant as well as loaned out academy players Cameron Borthwick-Jackson and James Wilson also did not make the cut.

United currently have 31 players registered for their first team, but five of them have expiring deals. Of course, not all of the other players can be sold in the same window, but the club needs to improve the quality within the squad if they want to keep up with the likes of City and Liverpool.
