There was a good tempo the encounter in the opening 15 minutes, although Benni McCarthy's charges shaded the possession statistics.

Wits had the first chance of the encounter when Daine Klate's cross found Thabang Monare, whose header kept out by Shu-Aib Walters.

City, on the other hand, had a lot of joy down the left flank with Lyle Lakay and Ebrahim Seedat as the first half went on, although chances were hard to come by.

The final 10 minutes of the half proved to be a scrappy affair, with the encounter being interrupted by a number of fouls.

However, City managed to take the lead just before the break when Ayanda Patosi blasted home from close range after the Wits defence failed to deal with Seedat's long throw.

Gavin Hunt opted for a change at the start of the second half, as Steven Pienaar replaced Gabadinho Mhango.

Wits had to wait until the 63rd minute for their first chance of the half, when Kobamelo Kodisang picked out Daine Klate, who failed to generate enough power in his header to beat Walters.

Benni McCarthy opted for his first change seven minutes later as veteran midfielder, Teko Modise replaced Sibusiso Masina.

Gavin Hunt's charges upped the tempo with Kosidang causing a few problems down the right flank, although the City defence stood firm.

However, City enjoyed most of the possession in the closing stages of the second half as they saw out the rest of match to claim the win.

Here's how they lined up:

CT City: 1. Walters, 12. Fielies, 16. Johannes, 2. Mkhize, 6. Seedat, 19. Putsche, 26. Nodada, 24. Masina (Modise 70'), 10. Patosi (Edmilson 73'), 7. Lakay, 45. Majoro.

Wits: 16. Josephs, 33. Frosler, 3. Hlatshwayo, 5. Damjanovic, 12. Hlanti, 6. Scott, 7. Klate (Pule 77'), 8. Monare (Kodisang 58'),  14, Claasen, 17. Mhango (Pienaar 46'), 10, Gamal.
