GladAfrica Championship Wrap: 15-16 February 2020

GladAfrica Championship Wrap: 15-16 February 2020

In the GladAfrica Championship, Swallows FC and Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM) recorded 1-0 wins over Mbombela United and Steenberg United respectively, however, second-placed Uthongathi FC could only manage a 1-1 draw in KZN against Cape Umoya United.

Furthermore, JDR Stars and University of Pretoria both dropped valuable points at home to lower-placed outfits.

Thanks to Phumelele "Ace" Bhengu's controversial penalty, the Birds continued their good form, whereas Tingwenyama remains in the drop zone with a mere four wins to their name.

TTM's victory came courtesy of Lebogang Mabotja's neat finish, which moved the Thohoyandou-based club to within a point of their opponents and seven adrift of log-leaders, Ajax Cape Town, who have a game in hand.

The Spirited Ones opened the score against the Cane Cutters via Gavin Hammers but Johnny Ferreira's side fought back to level matters when a shot from Menzi Ndwandwe ended up in the net as an own goal.

The Hammer Boys and Royal Eagles produced lots of thrills at the Giant Stadium, especially in the second half when successful efforts from Sipho Zwane and Onyedikachi Ononogbu helped Stars to finally grab the lead at 2-1.

But three minutes later, Eagles showing a new type of team effort under coach, Phuthi Mohafe, earned another value point in their fight against the drop.

For the record, Martin Kizza and Maselaelo Seanego, were on the scoreboard for Sbu Mpisane's outfit.

TS Sporting and Free State Stars also produced a 1-1 draw with goals from Sibusiso Khumalo and Siyabonga Dubula respectively, leaving both clubs in the bottom half of the table.

TS Galaxy overpowered AmaTuks 1-0 in Pretoria, thanks to Khayelihle Shozi, while at the Umhlathuze Sport Complex Jomo Cosmos managed the same score line against Richards Bay.

On Monday, the Urban Warriors entertain Real Kings at the Cape Town Stadium.
