Nedbank Cup
Teams: Kaizer Chiefs v SuperSport United
Date: 12 April 2014
Venue: FNB Stadium
Kaizer Chiefs and SuperSport United will be giving their all as they fight for a place in the semifinals of the Nedbank Cup at the FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The quarterfinal match will get underway at 15h00.
Chiefs will be coming up against a fellow top flight side for the first time in the competition this year, having edged Black Leopards 1-0 (National First Division) and FC Buffalo 2-1 (SAFA Second Division) in the Last 32 and 16 respectively.
As for SuperSport, they have already eliminated two Premiership teams en-route to the quarterfinals, with successive 1-0 victories over University of Pretoria and Moroka Swallows in the Last 32 and 16 respectively.
Amakhosi and Matsatsantsa have been regular combatants in cup competitions down the years, and their last such meeting was in the final of the Nedbank Cup in 2013.
The match went a full two hours, but a 94th minute goal from Bernard Parker handed Chiefs a 1-0 victory and sealed a League and Cup double for the Soweto giants, who are on course to repeat that incredible feat this season.
That victory was Chiefs' seventh in 11 cup games against SuperSport (who have won the other four). The teams have never gone as far as a penalty shootout and no less than five of their cup matches have been in a final – in that respect the Soweto side leads three wins to two.
In all, the teams have meet in 58 league and cup matches since 1990 when SuperSport were still known as Pretoria City. The head-to-head record is incredibly close, with 23 wins for Chiefs versus 22 wins for United (and the remaining 13 matches ending in draws).
Matsatsantsa will not be daunted by having to play away to Chiefs: in 27 matches with the Soweto side as hosts, United have claimed 12 wins compared to 11 for Chiefs.
The teams have crossed swords twice in the league already this season. SuperSport defeated Chiefs 3-1 at home in the first half of the campaign thanks to goals from Ennocent Mkhabela, Bennett Chenene and Bradley Grobler.
Amakhosi claimed a 1-0 win in the return match in early February with a goal from Bernard Parker, who has scored in his last three successive matches against SuperSport United.
