Sundowns began the defence of their title with a 2-0 home win over Tshwane derby rivals SuperSport United on August 3. The Brazilians claimed all three points thanks to goals from Sibusiso Vilakazi and Themba Zwane.

Chippa, on the other hand, opened their 2019/20 campaign with a frustrating 0-0 draw at home to top-flight rookies Stellenbosch on August 3. The Chilli Boys dominated the encounter and created several good chances, but were unable to capitalise in the final third of the field.

In head-to-head stats, Chippa and Sundowns have met in 12 league matches since 2012/13. The Brazilians boast an unbeaten record in the sequence, with seven wins and five draws recorded. The Eastern Cape side has recorded four draws and two defeats from their six games as hosts.

Last season Sundowns completed a league 'double' over Chippa, winning 1-0 in the Eastern Cape in October 2018 and 3-2 in the return game in Tshwane in April 2019.
