Two professional footballers have been awarded millions of rands after the PSL Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC) ruled in their favour in a contract dispute with Moroka Swallows, a ruling that now places financial responsibility on Marumo Gallants, who acquired the club’s status.

In the latest ruling handed down by the PSL Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC), players Buhle Thompson and Moeketsi Makhanya were awarded the full value of their contracts following a breach by Moroka Swallows, whose status was recently acquired by Marumo Gallants.
As the club was sold as a going concern, the responsibility to pay out the judgment now falls squarely on Gallants’ shoulders.
This follows a precedent set in 2023 when SAFPU successfully defended Mbulelo Wambi, Tshediso Patje, and Ephraim Mangweni, who were controversially dismissed by Swallows under allegations of an illegal strike.
Despite facing internal disciplinary action, the players were vindicated, and the DRC ordered that their full contracts be honoured, again totalling millions in owed wages.
“This is why we exist, to fight for justice and ensure players aren’t discarded when it’s convenient for clubs,” said SAFPU Secretary General Nhlanhla Shabalala.
“These victories, while personal for the players involved, are also symbolic for every footballer in the country. Clubs must honour contracts. If they don’t, we’ll hold them accountable.”
In an environment where club instability and player mistreatment are all too common, SAFPU’s legal interventions serve as a powerful warning to teams looking to flout their contractual responsibilities.
