Sundowns Star Mashego Facing Crunch Talks Over Future

The future of Mamelodi Sundowns left-back Terrence Mashego is set to be discussed next week, with sources confirming that a crucial meeting is scheduled for Monday as speculation grows around the Bafana Bafana international’s next move.

The 29-year-old has endured a frustrating campaign with the Brazilians, making just 13 appearances across all competitions last season as other players have been preferred in the left-back position ahead of him.

Mashego has found himself on the fringes of the squad at the Brazilians despite having arrived at Chloorkop in 2022 with a strong reputation from his Cape Town City days.

According to insiders, Mashego is keen on a fresh start, with Stellenbosch FC understood to be showing strong interest following the departure of Fawaaz Basadien to Sundowns.

“Monday’s meeting is important. There are conversations about the player’s future, and there is a hint that an exit could be on the table, possibly even on loan,” a source close to the situation told Soccer Laduma.

Kaizer Chiefs were linked with Mashego in January, but their offer reportedly fell short of Sundowns’ valuation, while Stellenbosch have now emerged as the contenders to land his signature.

The Mashego situation comes at a time when Sundowns are navigating several squad-related matters.

Recently, the Siya crew reported that right-back Khuliso Mudau has attracted serious transfer interest, with Polokwane City’s Thabang Matuludi being lined up as a potential replacement should Mudau depart.

Meanwhile, the club is still managing the fallout of the Lucas Ribeiro Costa termination saga, which sparked headlines this week.

In response to increased speculation around player movement, Sundowns recently released a statement emphasising their long-term vision and commitment to both the club and its footballers.

The statement underlined Sundowns’ commitment to nurturing talent through their youth academies, heavy investment in securing top players from South Africa, across Africa and South America, and a policy of engaging fairly with clubs interested in their players, among other key areas.

The club emphasised that it would continue to negotiate where necessary, while maintaining its ambitions to dominate both domestically and on the continent.

For Mashego, the upcoming meeting may provide clarity on whether his future lies at Chloorkop or elsewhere, and at 29, the defender is eager for consistent game time to revive his career at club level.
