Sundowns Youngster Breaks PSL's 16-Year Long Record

Sundowns Youngster Breaks PSL's 16-Year Long Record

In addition to breaking Kaizer Chiefs' record of 31 games unbeaten, Mamelodi Sundowns celebrated another record associated with the club in the PSL era, through youngster Siyabonga Mabena.

Sundowns set a new PSL record of 32 games unbeaten from September last year after thrashing Stellebosch 3-1 on Wednesday, surpassing the previous record held by Kaizer Chiefs, which was held since 2005.

The Brazilians also celebrated youngster Mabena making history, as he became the youngest player to score a goal in the league, in the PSL era, aged 16 years, seven months and nine days.

Mabena beat the previous record at the club which was held by Siyanda Xulu since November 2009, by 478 days, according to statistician OptaJabu.

The Sundowns junior international scored their third goal in a win over Stellies, where Peter Shalulile showed unselfishness by laying the ball to Mabena to have a tap-in, while as a striker he was also in a good position to score and increase his tally.

Masandawana midfielder Themba Zwane says what Shalulile did warmed his heart and demonstrated the brotherhood in the Sundowns team.

"Peter is a good human being, he showed leadership, he showed a brotherhood in that moment, he cares about everyone, he's a team player," Zwane said on Marawa Sports Worldwide

"I was so happy to see that situation happen when he gave Mabena the ball (to score), he knew that him scoring it will make him happy, it will boost his confidence, it shows the brotherhood that we have in the team and much respect for Peter.

"He (Mabena) was happy, busy singing in the changing room, we're also happy for him. It's always good to see a kid doing well at training given a chance, pushes himself and got a goal," he added.

Mabena, however, did not break the overall record of the youngest player to score a goal in all competitions in the PSL era, as that record is still held by Mkhanyiseli Siwahla who scored for Cape Town Spurs (previously known as Ajax Cape Town) against Dynamos in the 2004 Absa Cup aged 15 years, five months and 22 days.

Mabena only broke the league record which was previously held by Thulani Ngcepe for Silver Stars who scored in January 2007 aged 16 years, 11 months and 21 days.
