Shalulile: Before Sundowns I Was Poor…

Peter Shalulile, the DStv Premiership's leading marksman gave an honest assessment of the areas that were lacking in his game prior to joining Mamelodi Sundowns.

Shalulile had set the scene alight with Highlands Park between 2015 and 2020.

The Namibian had transitioned from right-back to become a prolific striker under then coach Owen Da Gama.

But as deadly as he was, there were areas of Shalulile's game that needed polishing and this was only exposed when he made the big-money move to Sundowns alongside Mothobi Mvala in September 2020.

Speaking to the Pitchside Podcast, Shalulile detailed his first day at Chloorkop, where he was awe-struck by the club's star players.

"I came here knowing that there was top players. I took my kit, put on my boots, I was shy to tuck in, thinking what will the guys say? I didn't tuck in," he said.

"We went to the field, I saw them playing rondo and I thought I come from a place where we don't even play rondo.

"To be honest, even my first touch, I was poor. Scanning, I was poor. There was a time coach Rulani [Mokwena] told me to go into the half space and I thought, 'what is a half space?' when it comes to training and those tactical things – I'm poor.

" I just prayed to God, let's finish this thing and play 11v11," he said.

He has grown in leaps and bounds since then and in his fourth season with the club and has netted 84 goals in 137 appearances, coupled with 22 assists with the Brazilians.
