Sundowns' Long-Term Vision for Club Icon

Sundowns' Long-Term Vision for Club Icon

MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA - JUNE 25: Themba Zwane of Mamelodi Sundowns (L) battles for the ball with Jhon Arias of Fluminense FC (R) during the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 group F match

Having renewed his contract late last season until June 2026, Mamelodi Sundowns are already working on extending the stay of their veteran midfielder for another year.

As previously reported by Soccer Laduma, the Brazilians' experienced playmaker had a contract that was due to expire on June 30, 2025, before the club extended it by a further 12 months.

Siya sources close to the club have now indicated that Sundowns are understood to have offered Themba Zwane another one-year extension.

"He could be having an extension like the way they have been doing with Denis Onyango. It's like a yearly contract now. It's believed that he has been offered another one-year contract after extending it for one year until June 2026. If all the involved parties agree on the new deal then Zwane will be at Sundowns until at least June 2027," the insider told Soccer Laduma.

A second source close to the situation stated that regardless of whether Zwane signs this particular extension, the club is believed to be planning to keep him in their setup for the long term.

"The first priority is for him to extend by one year in playing but it's believed that no matter the situation, he will still remain at the club. If not as a player then in other capacities which could be deemed necessary and right by the club. It's believed he will be at the club much longer beyond June 2026," the insider told the Siya crew.

The 35-year-old Bafana Bafana midfielder, who joined Sundowns in 2011 from Vardos FC, extended his current contract in April this year until June 2026. This potential new deal would take his association with the club beyond 16 years.

Soccer Laduma contacted his agent, Jazzman Mahlakgane, who confirmed that Zwane's current contract will run until the end of the forthcoming season.

"You know Sundowns had two options of one year each, and they took up both of them already. And now the last option is running out at the end of the season, and we will take up things from there. I can't comment on such things during the window period. Its a busy time you know," Mhlakgane observed.

This move aligns with Sundowns' strategy of securing the futures of their key players well in advance, particularly those who bring experience and leadership to the squad.
