Why Downs Coaches Will Have 'Upper Hand'

Why Downs Coaches Will Have 'Upper Hand'

Former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Brent Carelse feels the club's decision to send their technical team to the FIFA World Cup in Qatar will give them an upper hand in terms of acquiring new information and getting accustomed to new trends.

Sundowns have sent coaches Rulani Mokwena, Steve Komphela, Manqoba Mngqithi and Wendell Robinson to Qatar and the coaches have been attending different matches since landing in the Middle East.

The DStv Premiership champions have proven to be a step ahead when it comes to some of the latest trends in football, with Mokwena being credited for always introducing them into the team. The club has also taken its scouting network to another level, bringing in talent from South America in recent seasons.

Carelse says it's important for the coaches to get accustomed to the latest trends in the game, as this will put them in a better position compared to their counterparts in the Premiership.

"I feel Sundowns are empowering the coaches and them being there is to obviously try to keep up with the trends and learn new things, and that will definitely give them the upper hand in terms of information and educating themselves. I would not say that's entirely why the team is doing so well. I think why the team is doing so well is because of the players. At the end of the day, they are the ones who go out there and play for the club," Carelse told the Siya crew.
