8 In A Row: Downs Compared To Bayern, PSG

After Mamelodi Sundowns won a record extending eighth consecutive Betway Premiership title, Soccer Laduma compares their streak with other giants in the top European leagues.

Sundowns were crowned champions for the eighth straight season following their 3-0 win over Chippa United on Wednesday, having an unassailable lead at the top of the strandings.

The dominance of the Brazilians have at times being compared to Paris Saint-Germain, with suggestions that the PSL standard is weakening with the Tshwane giants not having strong competition for the biggest crown in South African football.

Since PSG went through the Qatari takeover in 2011, their longest streak of titles is actually only four in a row, although they missed out on the title only twice since then.

The team with the longest title streak in Ligue 1 is still Olympique Lyon, who won the championship for seven consecutive seasons between 2002 and 2008.

Across Europe's top five leagues, Bayern Munich currently have the record of the longest title streak, for 11 seasons in a row between 2013 and 2023.

Juventus, meanwhile, carry the record in Serie A, having won it for nine consecutive years between 2012 and 2020.

Could Sundowns' dominance end anytime soon?

"Sundowns are on a different level to everybody else, the type of players they are signing and now with the Club World Cup and the cash injection they will get with it, it just takes them to a complete different dimension," Simba head coach Fadlu Davids said on Mike Morton Talks Football YouTube Channel.

"Pirates have done extremely well under (Jose) Riveiro to push Sundowns to a certain limit this season, especially winning seven matches in a row but Sundowns are just on a different level. I don't see anyone domestically taking the league from them.

"If a coach like Riveiro (had) stayed for the next three years, step by step Pirates, without thinking about Sundowns, would just improve the team and would eventually catch up because there's only a certain amount that money can buy, one transition moment Sundowns changes a coach, (then) Pirates comes in," Davids suggested.

It took unfancied Bayer Leverkusen in Germany to disrupt Bayern's 11-year league winning streak last season.

However, The Bavarians have wrestled back the Bundesliga title in the current campaign.
