History: Sundowns Break PSL Record After Chippa Thrashing

Mamelodi Sundowns defeated Chippa United 3-0 to edge closer to clinching the Betway Premiership title on Wednesday evening.

Venue: Loftus Versfeld Stadium

Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso made a few changes after the win over Cape Town City, as Denis Onyango, Khuliso Mudau and Jayden Adams came in for Ronwen Williams, Thapelo Morena and Lucas Costa Ribeiro.

The Brazilians dominated possession in the early stages of the first half as expected, but they found it tough to break down a stubborn Chippa defence in the opening 20 minutes.

The hosts had to wait until the 28th minute to get the breakthrough as Mudau delightfully combined with Arthur Sales on the right before picking out Iqraam Rayners, who rifled the ball home for his 12th league goal of the season.

Sundowns got the second goal in the 39th minute when Chippa goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali's failed punch allowed Adams to sneak in and fire home his third league goal for the league leaders.

With that goal, the Brazilians have equalled the all-time scoring record for most goals in a single Premiership season in the 30-game era with 56 goals.

The Chilli Boys were nearly gifted a way back into the contest when Craig Martin closed down Onyango's clearance, but the Chippa full-back could only fire into the side-netting.

Cardoso showed no signs of taking their foot off the pedal as Rayners and Tashreeq Matthews made way for top scorer Ribeiro and Thapelo Maseko after the hour mark.

The third goal eventually arrived in the 80th minute as Maseko made the most of his opportunity after collecting a pass from Sales before rifling the ball into the far corner for Sundowns' 57th league goal of the campaign, which is a new PSL record.

Sundowns held the previous record of 56 goals in a season, which they set in the 2021/22 season but they have smashed that record with three matches to spare.

The win sees Sundowns restore their 12-point lead over second-place Orlando Pirates, while they will also be in action on Sunday against Stellenbosch FC.
