Insider: Chiefs Star Doesn't Want USA Return

With six months remaining on Njabulo Blom's loan at Kaizer Chiefs, the club is believed to have decided to activate the buyout clause in his contract when the initial loan agreement ends in June 2025.

Siya sources close to Amakhosi have indicated that the club is pleased with Blom's performance and values his contributions to the team's midfield, prompting the decision to pursue the buyout option.

As previously reported by Soccer Laduma, Chiefs are intent on retaining the midfielder, whom they initially sold to St Louis City in the MLS. Now, they are set to proceed with exercising the buyout option.

"You know in a loan deal there is either an obligation to buy at the end of the loan deal or an option to buy. So Chiefs have an option to buy when the loan deal expires and that is the one they are taking up. They feel that a fully fit Blom is a great asset to the club and the technical team is happy with what they have seen so far. Management is now working on that buyout clause from St Louis City. So, it will first be agreeing on buying then Chiefs will offer him their own new contract. But they are already working on buying for now," the Siya source stated.

A second insider stated that the buyout process should proceed smoothly, as all parties are thought to be content with the current situation involving Blom and St Louis City.

"The player is believed to have indicated that he doesn't want to go back to the USA and the club is happy with him at the moment, so as things stand, this makes the negotiations much easier from Chiefs' point of view. And because St Louis City bought him from Chiefs then the price of buying him back won't be that high as there is an understanding between the clubs. It's a good move for the player as well, as he wants to re-establish himself at the club, and go back to the national team, Bafana Bafana. So, the negotiations come at the right time," the second insider stated.

The 25-year-old Blom, a product of Chiefs' youth development program, was promoted to the senior team in 2019 before being sold to St Louis City in January 2023. Although he enjoyed a promising start in the MLS, he was loaned back to Chiefs in September 2024. Since his return, Blom has played Betway Premiership games consistently, having initially missed out due to a lack of match fitness.

Blom also has seven national Under-20 caps and has played for Bafana Bafana too, having been called up by coach Hugo Broos. His loan at Chiefs is set to end in June 2025, while his contract with St Louis City extends until December 2025. Efforts to reach Chiefs and his agent for comment were unsuccessful at the time of publishing this story.

Blom's potential permanent stay at Chiefs underscores the club's commitment to strengthening their core team with familiar talent. As negotiations advance, securing Blom's future with the club not only benefits his career aspirations but also enhances Chiefs' midfield stability, fostering growth and continuity within the squad at a time when the team needs to step up a gear.
