5 Things To Take From Chiefs' Defeat

5 Things To Take From Chiefs' Defeat

Following Kaizer Chiefs' clash with Tanzanian side Young Africans over the weekend, Soccer Laduma looks at five key points from the match leading up to the start of the new campaign in under two weeks.

Amakhosi were beaten 1-0 by the Tanzanian champions in a pre-season clash, before they take on Botswana Premier League side Township Rollers this Saturday.

Back-four system

Judging from the clash, Ntseki is likely to go with a back four, with a proper balance of a right and left footed centre-back pairing. New signings Given Msimango and Thatayaone Ditlhokwe got the nod in central defence against Young Africans, but the technical team will need to continue working on the partnership to ensure they have a good understanding.

Edmilson preferred at left back?

The addition of Ditlhokwe as a left-sided centre back could see Dove moving to the left back, which he occupied previously during his time at Cape Town City. He played as a left-sided centre back last season under previous head coach Arthur Zwane, either alongside Zitha Kwinika or Siyabonga Ngezana at left back. He might need to get used to playing at left if the partnership of Msimango and Ditlhokwe flourishes. He'll have competition from Sifiso Hlanti and Happy Mashiane at left back.

Mmodi to be used on the left flank?

Pule Mmodi enjoyed himself on the left flank for Amakhosi on Saturday, making some good runs into the opposition half, though the final product was not always on point. The former Golden Arrows player could be a weapon Ntseki uses from the left flank, allowing him to cut into his favoured right foot to either take shots at goal or create opportunities for teammates.

Castillo to protect the back four?

The Venezuelan midfielder started in front of the back four and showed some good touches and anticipation at times, but it will be interesting to see how he adjusts to the pace of the PSL once the season gets underway. He's usually calm on the ball and is not afraid to collect the ball from the back and start the attack with short passes to his fellow midfielders.
