The Goalkeeping & Defending Conundrum At Chiefs

Most of the money Kaizer Chiefs spent in the off-season was to beef up their defence, including the goalkeeping department, but it's proving to ironically be their biggest problem at the moment.

No matter how many opportunities are given to the different goalkeepers at Chiefs, no one seems to want to make the number one jersey their own.

Before sustaining an injury on international duty, Fiacre Ntwari had come under fire for some underwhelming performances and there was talk of him possibly being benched.

With Ntwari out at the moment, Brandon Petersen got his second chance to start for Amakhosi over the weekend and was caught off his line early in the second half as Royal AM's Ayabulela Maxwele took advantage with a well taken strike.

Defensively, Amakhosi were poor, allowing the visitors to get an equaliser late as the hosts dropped points on home turf.

Former Chiefs defender Mokete Tsotetsi raised concern over how goalkeepers have not been taking their opportunities, but also pointed a finger on how the defence let the team down as well.

"To be honest, it's a big concern for me. But remember, the goalkeeper has a big role to play. But it's not only about the goalkeeper because the defence also plays a big role and Chiefs have to work on finding the right combination at the back," Tsotetsi said to the Siya crew.

"It's easy for a goalkeeper to concede if the defence is not solid. It's not a good look for a team like Chiefs to be conceding in every game. I would like to see coach Nabi giving Bvuma a fair chance. Give him a few games and see how they can establish a solid defence. Going forward, Chiefs are good, but they are lacking in defence and it's something they need to work on. I feel that Bvuma can give Chiefs something."
