Kaizer Chiefs suffered a 4-0 defeat to Tanzanian giants Young Africans at a sold out Toyota Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Toyota Cup

Result: Kaizer Chiefs 0-4 Young Africans

Date: 28 July 2024

Venue: Toyota Stadium

New coach Nasreddine Nabi went with the regulars from last season, although Brandon Petersen started ahead of Bruve Bvuma between the sticks while new signings Ntwari and Rushwin Dortley were named on the bench.

The game was played at slow tempo in the early parts of the first half, with neither side showing any real attacking intent, much to the frustration of the supporters packed in the stadium.

The visitors got the breakthrough in the 24th minute when Prince Dube pounced on some slack defending and calmly slotted past Petersen with a first-time finish.

Young Africans remained the bigger threat after going ahead and were particularly dangerous down the right flank and they could have extended their advantage had it not been for the decision-making in the 18-yard area.

Chiefs fell further behind on the stroke of halftime when the young Nkosana Mbuthu gave the ball away in the box, which allowed Stephane Aziz Ki to calmly slot home into the bottom corner.

After changing to the new away kit, there was also a change in personal as Ranga Chivaviro made way for Nkosingiphile Ngcobo, as Ashley Du Preez moved in to a more central role in the attack.

However, it was Young Africans who got the next goal as a swift counter attack ended with Dube turning provider for Clement Mzize, who showed great composure to slot past Petersen from a tight angle.

The rout continued as the Tanzanian giants added a fourth goal in the Aziz Ki pounced on Samkelo Zwane's poor back pass and did well to evade a couple tackles before rifling the ball home.

That was Aziz Ki's final involvement in the clash and he certainly proved why a number of clubs are keen on his services, including South African giants Orlando Pirates, according to reports.

It was a disappointing afternoon all round for the hosts and the supporters, who came out in their numbers in Bloemfontein.

Here's how they lined up:

Kaizer Chiefs: Petersen, Frosler, Msimango,  Mbuthu, Dithlokwe Maart, Zwane, Shabalala, Vilakazi, Du Preez, Chivaviro.

Subs: Bvuma, Ntwari, Mthethwa, Castillo, Saile, Ngcovo, Kwinika, Duba, Ozeomena, Jansen, Mmodi, Radebe, Dortley.
