Stats Prove Khune Is Not Chiefs' Answer

Stats Prove Khune Is Not Chiefs' Answer

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen has come under fire for his recent costly errors, even though he kept a clean sheet in the 3-0 victory against AmaZulu on Saturday.

The jury is still out on whether Petersen is the reliable keeper Amakhosi should be backing for the rest of the campaign. Is Itumeleng Khune the solution? Soccer Laduma compares the two goalkeepers.

Chiefs had one of their worst campaigns in the 2022/23 season, where they lost a staggering 12 league matches.

The gravity of that statistic is demonstrated by the fact that Marumo Gallants, who were relegated, lost one game fewer than Amakhosi, as they lost 11 matches.

The main reason for the Glamour Boys' bad season was that they did not have a consistent goalkeeper, as Brandon Petersen, Itumeleng Khune and Bruce Bvuma all alternated in goal.

With Khune nearing retirement, the Soweto giants, rightfully so, are seemingly preparing for the future, as Petersen has started in all the games they played this season and was given the captain's armband.

However, the former Bidvest Wits shot-stopper has already made costly errors that led to Amakhosi losing two league games and there are shouts to bring Khune back in goal.

However, head coach Molefi Ntseki is in a predicament, as the experienced Bafana Bafana shot-stopper did not fair any better when given a chance last season.

The Glamour Boys also had a bad start last campaign, where they lost two games in their first three matches and eventually they brought back Khune.

The 36-year old started 11 games for Amakhosi in the league last season and with him in goal, the team lost five matches.

Khune had the same or slightly worse statistic than Petersen last season, who had more appearances (16) but the team lost five games with him in goal as well.

The Glamour Boys lost the other two league games with Bruce Bvuma in goal, who started only three games.

In as much as Khune is a fan-favourite and is usually recalled when things are tough, recent statistics show that he is not exactly the ideal answer anymore.
