Pitso Points The Way For Chiefs' Resurgence

Pitso Points The Way For Chiefs' Resurgence

Pitso Mosimane

Kaizer Chiefs, a club long admired for its winning tradition and charismatic presence in South African football, has faced a challenging period marked by a nine-year trophy drought and a disappointing tenth-place finish in the last DStv Premiership season.

Amidst these struggles, renowned South African coach Pitso Mosimane, affectionately known as 'Jingles', has stepped forward with advice to help the Soweto giants reclaim their former glory. Mosimane, whose coaching credentials include transformative stints at SuperSport United, Mamelodi Sundowns, and most notably, Al Ahly SC in Egypt, is no stranger to leading teams to success both domestically and on the continent.

Under his leadership, Sundowns clinched the CAF Champions League title in 2016, and he repeated this feat with Al Ahly in 2020 and 2021.Drawing from his extensive experience, Mosimane suggests that Chiefs should broaden their focus beyond domestic competitions and place a stronger emphasis on continental success.

"It's not only about the league here, it's not about winning the Champions League only.  Step by step show confidence and go into the group stages of the Confederation Cup. You have to be somewhere to move but it needs a plan, it needs time," Mosimane told Sports Night Amplified with Andile.

Mosimane emphasized the importance of having a robust squad, recalling the high calibre of players that have historically donned the Chiefs jersey.

"We're talking about Kaizer Chiefs, do you know the history of Kaizer Chiefs?  They've always had the best players ever. We're not talking about a Maritzburg United to turn things around, we're talking about Chiefs.

"The best players played for Chiefs, you can't win games if you don't have good players. How does Manchester City turn around things because Pep Guardiola is a magician? He's got (Erling) Haaland and all these top players," he stated, drawing parallels to how top managers like Pep Guardiola have turned around teams with exceptional talent.

Reflecting on his own success, Mosimane highlighted the strategy of continually enhancing the team roster, a tactic that has kept his teams competitive on all fronts.

"Also, with me at Sundowns to turn it around we had (good) players and look what has happened. They kept buying good players hence Rulani (Mokwena) is on top of his game," he added.

As Chiefs ponder their next steps, Mosimane's advice offers a strategic blueprint that could lead to a comprehensive revival of the club. By focusing on strengthening the squad and aiming for continental success, Chiefs could reignite their legacy and satisfy their longing for silverware. This approach not only aligns with the club's illustrious history but also sets a foundation for sustained success in the challenging landscape of African football.
