Chiefs’ Plans For Mako After Pirates Exit

With former Orlando Pirates defender Paseka Mako expected to join Kaizer Chiefs, insiders have revealed what the plans are for the Soweto giants for the player.

According to sources, Mako is expected to join Amakhosi as part of their upcoming pre-season tour in the Netherlands, following his recent departure from the Buccaneers.

Mako, along with teammate Thabiso Monyane, was officially released by Pirates last Friday as the club confirmed several squad changes ahead of the new campaign.

The 31-year-old’s contract was set to expire at the end of June and, like Innocent Maela and Miguel Timm, he will not be part of Pirates' plans for the 2025/26 season.

Now, in a significant development, sources close to the situation indicate that Mako is on the verge of joining the Buccaneers’ fierce rivals, Kaizer Chiefs.

“The deal is as good as done,” a source told the Siya crew. “He is likely to join the team for their pre-season tour of Europe.”

Chiefs recently confirmed that they will be travelling to the Netherlands for pre-season preparations, marking the second consecutive year that Amakhosi take their build-up to Europe. Last season, the Glamour Boys spent pre-season in Turkey.

Mako’s arrival would mark the second successive transfer of a full-back from Pirates to Chiefs, following Bongani Sam’s move last season.

However, Sam has struggled to make an impact at Naturena, failing to register a competitive appearance due to injury setbacks and stiff competition for places.

Chiefs are reportedly eager to integrate Mako into the squad early, with the club's technical team identifying his experience, versatility, and energy as key assets in their effort to revamp the defence.

A product of the Mamelodi Sundowns Development Academy, Mako joined Pirates in 2018 and went on to become a dependable figure in the side’s backline over several seasons. Despite his recent challenges with form and injuries, he remains a respected professional with plenty to offer.
