Update: Establishing Chiefs' Women's Team

Two years after announcing that a plan is in full swing to get a women's team off the ground, Kaizer Chiefs' Marketing and Commercial Director, Jessica Motaung provided an update on where the club stands on this matter.

It was in August 2022 when Motaung announced that Chiefs were close to finalising a women's team to add to the club's ever-expanding brand and contribute to women's football in the country.

"I'm very excited about the possibilities that can happen. A lot of work is being done behind the scenes by the way, a lot of strategising and planning around it and we look forward to launching a team," she told journalists at the time.

But Amakhosi's quest to join the likes of TS Galaxy, Royal AM, Mamelodi Sundowns and more recently Stellenbosch has not been without its challenges.

Chiefs held several talks with a number of clubs including Janine Van Wyk owned JVW about possibly purchasing the club, but to no avail as the two parties couldn't agree on terms.

But Motaung says the club remains focused on their goal of starting up a women's club and that the plan to do so is still in full swing.

"We're working on that. It's still important, and it's very paramount on my agenda sitting at the CAF Women's Football committee and just also seeing the opportunities around women's football is something that I'm working very tirelessly on," she told journalists at the Toyota Cup launch in Sandton this week.

"It's taking time and I ask our supporters to have patience and also it fits in with a bigger model, a big SAFA model and a big structure that we also have to look at and see how we fit into. But we're excited about that. It's a project that we've been working on," she added.
