Chiefs Face Left Back Dilemma: Basadien Latest

Chiefs Face Left Back Dilemma: Basadien Latest

HAMMARSDALE, SOUTH AFRICA - MAY 03: Fawaaz Basadien, captain of Stellenbosch FC during the Betway Premiership match between Golden Arrows and Stellenbosch FC

A prominent South African club has temporarily shelved discussions about a defender's future as they continue their challenging search for an experienced left-back ahead of the new season.

As previously reported by Soccer Laduma, Amakhosi are believed to be looking at signing a new left-back, which they have been trying to secure since the start of the just-ended season. Their main targets have been Stellenbosch FC left-back Fawaaz Basadien and Simba SC left-back Mohamed Hussein.

Now insiders close to the club have indicated that Kaizer Chiefs are believed to be struggling to get either of the two, and if that continues to be case then they would have to decide to keep left-back Happy Mashiane.

"Happy (Mashiane) is amongst the players who have been told to report for the pre-season meeting at the end of June. This means the team still has plans for him. You know with Edmilson Dove believed to be leaving at the end of June then the team will only have Bradley Cross as a left back so they believe Happy (Mashiane) should stay at the club until they are sure they have signed a dependable left back who can work with Cross. So, he is not going anywhere right now until a new signing is available, " the insider revealed to the Siya crew.

A second insider privy to reliable information further stated that despite tough competition from both Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates, Chiefs are still hopeful that they can sign Stellenbosch FC left-back Fawaaz Basadien.

"They haven't given up on Fawaaz (Basadien) though it's believed that Sundowns have offered more money than Chiefs and Pirates. And there is Tanzanian international Mohamed Hussein. But since they haven't signed any of them yet they are keeping Happy Mashiane and it's also believed they can promote Kabelo Nkgwesa. That's the club's plan for now," the second insider told Soccer Laduma.

Mashiane is a product of Kaizer Chiefs' juniors and was promoted to the senior team in 2019 when the team was under a FIFA transfer ban. Since his promotion, he has managed to play in many league games. This season he has only featured in a few games as he was affected by a long-term injury.
