Kaizer Chiefs' Anthony Akumu Agay Impressing In New Position

Kaizer Chiefs' Anthony Akumu Agay Impressing In New Position

A former Kaizer Chiefs defender has lauded Anthony Akumu Agay for his improved performances and high work-rate in recent matches.

Following Chiefs head coach Gavin Hunt's decision to change Akumu's position from midfield to defence as a centre-back, there has been a notable improvement in the Kenyan international's performances in Amakhosi's resurgence in the DStv Premiership.

Hunt went on record to say that Akumu was 'fantastic' and that he was the team's best player after the recent match against Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila.

Speaking to the Siya crew, former Chiefs defender Tlou Molekwane heaped praise on the 29-year-old for his high work-rate.

"Obviously, when Agay arrived at Kaizer Chiefs he was joining a big club and playing for Chiefs comes with a lot of pressure and it (struggling at a big club) happens to everyone. It takes time to settle in at a club as big as Chiefs. But what I know for sure is that someone can't be a bad player after one or two games. But as people, we are quick to judge. What we must remember is that he (Agay) started playing while the team was under pressure. People don't want mistakes but unfortunately, that is not possible in this game," said Molekwane.

"Maybe, when we compare him to the other players who play in that midfield position, he wasn't comfortable on the ball. In the middle of the park, it's very busy and there's a lot of traffic there. You need players who are comfortable on the ball there and people who are able to come out of tight situations. At the back, where he is now playing it's easy. You can even play two touches the whole game, just receive and pass throughout the game. What I like the most about him in his new position is that he has a good height for it. I know coach Gavin very well that he like tall and heavily built defenders and you get that from Agay. He's like your (Mulomowandau) Mathoho and (Daniel) Cardoso, so to speak," said the former right-back.
