Home Of Legends: Can Chiefs Do It When It Counts?

Home Of Legends: Can Chiefs Do It When It Counts?

Even though Kaizer Chiefs have gone a decade without winning a major trophy, the club has lifted numerous other trophies such as the Macufe Cup, the CUFA Cup, and this past weekend they were victorious in the Home of Legends Cup.

This is all in contrast to Chiefs' disappointing Carling Knockout thrashing at the hands of Mamelodi Sundowns in the quarter-finals recently, as such they only have the Nedbank Cup as an opportunity to finally get back to winning ways and to potentially end this trophy drought.

What could be the problem when it comes to Chiefs and official PSL tournaments like the Carling Knockout and the MTN8 too? Notably, Amakhosi couldn't participate in the latter tournament because they didn't finish in the top eight last season.

Former Chiefs defender Thabang Rooi believes that Chiefs place themselves under too much pressure when they play in official tournaments when compared to the smaller cups.

Talking to Soccer Laduma in an exclusive interview, the former defender stated that pressure makes them make mistakes which leads to them losing games they should have won.

"Winning is always good. To tell you the truth, I was asking someone about it because the same players are playing in the league and these cups. They fail to win the official trophies. Maybe they misunderstand the purpose or importance of official trophies, or maybe for some players these official games are more difficult for them," Rooi told the Siya crew.

"Whether it's a friendly game or a friendly cup, that's how you gain confidence. Every time you win you are confident of doing better in the next game and mainly at this time of the FIFA break. But I think the main problem of Chiefs winning the 'small' cups and not doing well in the official cups is the pressure they face from all quarters that they have stayed a long period without winning anything.

"When you are under pressure you make mistakes and that's what has been happening with Chiefs. But it's good that they win these 'small' cups at a certain stage it will rub off onto the team where they start winning official trophies again. But as I have said, the main problem is the pressure they have after going almost 10 years without a trophy. But it's a positive that they don't lose everything," Rooi believes.

Even though Amakhosi beat a significantly weakened Mamelodi Sundowns team in the final, Rooi believes that it doesn't matter who you beat in the Home of Legends, as long as you can win the trophy and boost confidence.

"You can't judge them by saying they won against a B team or C team. The team that plays represents the club and every club always wants to win and when they win those games they boost their confidence. So, we hope that when the league resumes then the team can continue with that winning spirit and things will change for the better and they start winning trophies again. There is still the league and the Nedbank Cup to fight for. For Chiefs they need consistency. Those teams, they have players who are competing week in, week out," Rooi concluded to Soccer Laduma.

Amakhosi's next game is in the league on 27 November against Richards Bay at Peter Mokaba Stadium. As Chiefs prepare for their upcoming Premiership match, the insights from Rooi highlight the importance of managing pressure and building confidence. Fans will be eager to see if the team can translate their success from the Home Of Legends to the PSL.
