A former Kaizer Chiefs player has given his thoughts on how the arrival of Njabulo Ngcobo and Austin Dube has raised much-needed competition at the back for the Soweto giants.
Both Ngcobo and Dube are yet to start a match since joining Amakhosi during pre-season, as head coach Stuart Baxter has preferred the central defensive partnership of Mulomowandau Mathoho and Daniel Cardoso, who are the tried and tested pairing at Naturena.
Former Amakhosi goalkeeper Aubrey Mathibe feels the presence of Ngcobo and Dube has added more competition, which is why Mathoho and Cardoso have started the campaign well.
"Remember that Mathoho and Cardoso are also still national team assets. The good thing now is that the competition is high. Now you know that if you do not perform, then you are out. That's how it is at Chiefs now. It's like how it is at Sundowns. Remember at Sundowns, if you make a mistake, you are out," Mathibe told the Siya crew.
"So now Chiefs has that depth and players know that they need to perform. So Mathoho and Cardoso know that if they make mistakes, they will be out. That's why they are performing. It's good for the team to have that type of competition. Chiefs have depth now and that's why I feel they have started the season well."
