Manqele: Nothing Wrong With Chiefs Not Signing In January

Manqele: Nothing Wrong With Chiefs Not Signing In January

Even though there have been question marks on the quality of the Kaizer Chiefs squad, their former player Edward Manqele talks to Soccer Laduma about why the club was right not to sign new players in January.

Rivals Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates were busy during the transfer window, but Chiefs were quiet and the feeling is that the club wanted to give interim coach Cavin Johnson time to work with his players.

Amakhosi made a number of signings at the beginning of the season and each of them needed more time to settle in, so instead of replacing them with players of similar quality, there is sense in being patient.

"They made the right decision. It was right not to sign players in January. Chiefs have good players in all departments and what was needed was for the coach to have time with them just like in preseason and I believe they have looked at what combinations he can use going forward," Manqele told Soccer Laduma.

"I think that's what they needed and not signing new players. So, not signing players in January was a good idea for Chiefs. There is nothing wrong with that," Manqele said.

Manqele, who had also played for Mamelodi Sundowns in his career added that he feels Chiefs will improve after the Africa Cup of Nations break.

"Yes, they can improve. They had time to work together with the coach during this Afcon break and now he knows them better because this was like a preseason camp and it will help the coach understand the players and the combinations he would want to work with going forward.

"That's why I am saying that not signing players in January was also good because he could have had time to learn the new players as well. But as it stands now they can improve their performance and do well in the second round of the season as well as the Nedbank Cup," Manqele concluded.
