With the final game of the year upon us, Kaizer Chiefs' Itumeleng Khune has one last chance to get some last minutes in for the Glamour Boys before the end of the decade.
2019 will go down as the worst year in Khune's footballing career having made just two appearances for his club over the course of the 12 months, playing only 118 minutes as he dealt with two major injuries.
Now though, with Chiefs playing just three games since their Soweto Derby win over Orlando Pirates on November 9, Khune has had time to get himself back match ready after being declared 'medically fit' towards the end of last month.
Daniel Akpeyi, who has become Ernst Middendorp's number one over the last year, played against Bloemfontein Celtic in Chiefs' penultimate game of the year on December 7, but could the extra two weeks since then have given Khune time to get his name back on the squad list?
Chiefs head to KwaZulu-Natal this weekend to face Maritzburg United as they look for revenge against the team that knocked them out of the Telkom Knockout, and it would no doubt come as a big boost to the table-toppers if their longest-serving player could make a return.
Khune, who turns 33 in 2020, is unlikely to start against Maritzburg on Sunday afternoon given Chiefs' impressive form in the Absa Premiership, but there may be a chance for him to break back into the matchday squad ahead of Bruce Bvuma should Middendorp deem him ready.
