Spotlight on Chiefs' Use of Devices On The Bench

Kaizer Chiefs' new technical team led by Nasreddine Nabi have shown a level of commitment, not seen at the club for a long time, with the transformation of the analysis department evident.

Amidst various accusations which were levelled at Chiefs for not performing according to expectations in the past, was that the Soweto giants' analysis department and how they link with the technical team was below par.

The Glamour Boys, if they were to return to their glory days, supporters and pundits argued that they needed to be in line with modern trends and transform the analysis department.

Since Nabi arrived with his technical team, the investment in this area has been evident, as they have taken on board live data analysis, using tablets on the field, not only to see the replays to question officials but to make informed decisions, as it has become standard particularly in European football.

Mamelodi Sundowns seemed to be the leading team in the PSL using technology on the bench to watch the game in retrospect as it happens and so there was confusion after the Chiefs gadgets on the bench were dismissed by referee Sikhumbuzo Gasa, following a protest by their bench over a controversial winning goal by Iqraam Rayners, which opened a huge debate and Video Assistant Referee (VAR) calls, on whether Lucas Ribeiro Costa was offside or not, when he received the ball and played a square pass to Rayners.

However, Amakhosi can continue to use their tablets on the bench, as Gasa made the wrong call to demand them to be taken away from the bench against Sundowns, according to former referee Victor Hlungwane.

"The law says the use of any form of electronic communication by team officials is permitted where it relates to player welfare, tactical or coaching purposes," Hlungwane said on Metro FM Sports

"A team official who uses unauthorized equipment or who behaves in an inappropriate manner as a result of electronic communication equipment must be sent off.

"We never saw [a technical member] being sent off but we saw the gadget being sent off. We were shocked, we don't have such a law. Incorrect decision by the ref to send the gadgets off, he should have sent off the [ technical member] who behaved inappropriately as the result of the use of communication devices. So that was incorrect for Gasa to send the communication device off," Hlungwane added.
