Chiefs Contemplating Future Role for Khune?

Chiefs Contemplating Future Role for Khune?

As previously reported by the Siya crew, Kaizer Chiefs were set to meet Itumeleng Khune and his camp regarding his future.

News reaching Soccer Laduma is the initial discussions between the veteran goalkeeper and his Naturena employers were positive, although a more detailed conversation is expected to take place immediately after the final game of the season in May.

The veteran campaigner will see his current contract expire at the end of the campaign and having been at the Glamour Boys since he was only 13 years old, it's not expected that the Soweto giants will simply discard a player who has worked his way to being an icon and allow him to leave the club and its structures completely.

Siya sources have indicated that there may be a role for Khune behind the scenes should a decision be taken not to offer him a new deal.

According to insiders, the 35-year-old wants to continue playing but is aware that leaving Amakhosi means he will need to take a salary cut elsewhere. The Ventersdorp-born star is among the highest earners at Chiefs.

In that context, Khune won't rush making a call on his career if it comes to possibly leaving the only Premier Soccer League club he has ever played for.

Since being dropped to second-choice keeper behind Brandon Petersen this season, the fan-favourite's future has been a talking point.

But the Siya crew understands preliminary talks between the player's camp and Chiefs suggest there's no need to panic at the moment.
