Kaizer Chiefs made a promising start in the CAF Champions League preliminary round after edging PWD Bamenda 1-0 in the first leg on Sunday afternoon.

Chiefs made five changes from the loss against Swallows FC, as Erick Mathoho, Anthony Akumu, Njabulo Blom and Bernard Parker were all recalled alongside a rare start for Siphelele Ntshangase.

The visitors were under pressure in the early exchanges, with Bamenda pressing them in their own half while Amakhosi goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune was called into action a couple of times.

Chiefs struggled to find chances going forward in a very scrappy affair but Parker did manage to test goalkeeper Haschou Kerrido midway through the first stanza with a header.

Khune was called into action just before the break after making a great save at the near post, as the sides went into the break goalless.

Chiefs were more adventurous after the break but were pushing too high and they were caught on a counter-attack ten minuts inside the second stanza but Khune produced another good save to deny Bamenda the opener.

With the home side putting them under pressure,  Hunt brought on Lebogang Manyama in place of Leonardo Castro for the final 13 minutes.

The changed paid off as Manyama's corner found Mathoho, who nodded home the opening in the last six minutes.

Manyama conceded a penalty in the last minute, but Khune saved his blushes to save resultant spot-kick, which earned his side a 1-0 win ahead Friday's second leg.

Here's how they started:

Chiefs: Khune, Mphahlele, Mathoho, Cardoso, Ngezana, Agay, Blom, Ntshangase, Parker, Castro, Billiat

Subs: Akpeyi, Moleko, Baccus, Kambole, Katsande, Ngcobo, Sasman, Manyama, Matsheke.
