Kaizer Chiefs legend, Lucky Stylianou, is expecting Amakhosi to reinforce their squad with new players but says the club should be selective on who they bring on board.
With the league currently on a break due to the Africa Cup of Nations, the Soweto giants have been linked with no less than three players who are in Cote d'Ivoire with their respective national teams.
Bafana Bafana midfielder Oswin Appollis, Chippa United and Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabili, as well as AmaZulu and Namibia left-back Riaan Hanamub are some of the players understood to be targeted for moves to Naturena.
Stylianou says Chiefs should carefully select their targets to sign players that will assist in bringing the glory days of winning trophies back to the club.
The Good
"I always tell coaches and technical directors that they've got to understand what is required to win league titles. There is no point in going to each and every club to sign their best player. That best player at his best might not be good enough to bring the title to the village. My point is that every coach in the world needs to understand how to avoid relegation with the squad they've got to keep the team because there's no financial backing and they are doing a lot of work to keep their respective teams in all the Premier Leagues throughout the world. And then you've got coaches who are given top teams to coach and they fail to perform. That is what is happening at clubs like Barcelona, Chelsea and Arsenal with all the players that they bought, Manchester United and many others throughout the world. So, Kaizer Chiefs at the moment, I think they are falling under the same group. How do you get out if it? You get out if it by knowing and understand the standard that is required to win the league. Can this player make it at Chiefs? If you have doubts, don't sign him, it's simple as that. Signing someone with the aim of improving him in his position is not going to earn you a league title. At a club like Chiefs, the talk should always be about league titles, and not a top four or top six, or anything like that," said Stylianou.
The Bad
"If you are an average club, like a middle tier club and all that, then obviously the playing staff is sufficient. But if you are a title chasing club and the history and culture of Kaizer Chiefs, we need to up our game a bit. It's not even a debate, the results reflect that we need to start looking at some senior and better players to add to the squad. The current squad, with all respect to them, have had enough time now and have showed that they are not going to bring the league title home," he said.
The Ugly
"If we are just happy with mediocrity, then yeah, keep the current squad. But with Chiefs and their history, there is no way that we can be happy with mediocrity. We need to go out there and find better and probably the best players," added Stylianou.
"Chiefs' success is based on outstanding history"
"You can see that supporters now they have been demanding that we have the success. And what is success? Because that is important to understand. For others, success is making the professional league and playing football and it doesn't matter who he plays for. For that person, as long as he plays football in a professional league, that is his success. For Kaizer Chiefs, fortunately, their success is based on their outstanding history," concluded Stylianou.
Who are the players that Chiefs should target in January?
