OPINION: DStv Prem Team Of The Season

OPINION: DStv Prem Team Of The Season

Before the final weekend of the season, I thought it would be perfect to give you my team of the season, based on performances in the DStv Premiership.

GK: Ronwen Williams - The impact of Williams at Mamelodi Sundowns has been something quite extraordinary. He not only was important in making saves, but he was so involved in the play as well because of how comfortable he is with the ball at his feet.

RB: Khuliso Mudau - The Sundowns man has made the right back position his own and his work rate is admirable. He has been consistent throughout the campaign, in both defence and attack for the champions.

CB: Olwethu Makhanya - He still has a long way to go and improve on in his game, but this 19-year-old has done well to hold his own against some of the most experienced players in the league. The Stellenbosch FC defender can be happy with his contribution this season, with 19 matches.

CB: Mothobi Mvala - What impresses me the most about him is how he was able to get into that central defensive position at Sundowns after playing for most of his career in midfield.

LB: Fawaaz Basadien - From his time at Swallows last season, I've been a fan of Basadien's left foot. He whips in some delightful crosses into the box and has been a key player in Stellenbosch rise into the top eight during this season.

CM: Teboho Mokoena - For me, Mokoena has been the best player at Sundowns. We live in a world where goals and assists are all people talk about, but the impact of Mokoena in front of the Sundowns' back four has been incredible. He is a box-to-box midfielder with an ability to break opposition play and start attacks for his side with short or long range passes. Definitely a candidate for footballer of the season for me.

CM: Grant Margeman - I've been impressed with how the Sundowns loanee has performed at SuperSport this season. His style of play suits the way Gavin Hunt likes to play and it's no surprise he has been able to excel more than he did at Swallows last season.

RW: Devin Titus - If he was young enough, I'd say he should win the young player of the season award. But at 22, he no longer qualifies for the award. The Stellenbosch FC winger has been important in both defence and attack for the club, scoring five goals in 25 appearances. He has the energy to go on for 90 minutes week in and out and I would not be surprised if the big clubs in the country start enquiring about his services.

LW: Monnapule Saleng - The numbers for Saleng have been impressive this season, especially in a league where players don't have good numbers. It's his first season at Pirates and he has carried a lot of the responsibilities in the final third on his shoulders.

ST: Khanyisa Mayo - This is the season Mayo has really come alive. I've had the pleasure of watching Mayo's progress from the days he was in the national under-17 team and he has now become one of the hottest strikers in the league. He gives Cape Town City coach Eric Tinkler the option of playing him on the wing or upfront as a number nine. What I like is that he has become a lot calmer in front of goal.

ST: Etiosa Ighodaro - If you look at the number of times Ighodaro has kept Chippa United alive this season, you'd see how much of an impact he's had in the team. The Nigerian has scored point-saving goals this season. Close to 15 points have been secured by the goals scored by the former University of Pretoria striker. If he had not scored those goals, Chippa would probably have been automatically relegated by now.
