OPINION: Top 5 PSL Signings Of The Season

OPINION: Top 5 PSL Signings Of The Season

Now that the season is over, it's time to look back at the signings which made the biggest impacts in the PSL.

A number of clubs in the DStv Premiership made an effort to bolster their squads and quite a number of players stood out as top signings. This week, I give you my top five signings of the season.

Nkosinathi Sibisi (Orlando Pirates)

Signed from Golden Arrows, Sibisi chose the Buccaneers ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns and that certainly worked out well. Nominated for the DStv Premiership Defender of the Season award, Sibisi brought in a lot of calmness to the Pirates defence, using his leadership qualities to guide his teammates during some of the more difficult situations. The Bafana Bafana international was important throughout the Nedbank Cup campaign, forming a solid partnership with Tapelo Xoki in central defence. He was arguably Pirates' best signing this season.

Etiosa Ighodaro (Chippa United)

If it were not for the Nigerian's goals, Chippa United would be relegated. He scored quite a number of point saving goals and they were more than enough to keep the club in the topflight. On loan to Chippa from Sundowns, the Nigerian made a big impact and it would not be surprising if the club makes an effort to try to keep him for at least another season. The 21-year-old forward found the back of the net 11 times in all competitions and also contributed with two assists for the club as they managed to finish just above the relegation zone. Chippa did well to get him on board this past season and it would definitely make sense for them to try to keep him for the next term.

Ronwen Williams (Mamelodi Sundowns)

There was a lot of concern before the start of the season when Williams signed for Sundowns from SuperSport United. Probably the biggest concern was whether he would get game time and how the move might threaten his position as the number one goalkeeper for Bafana Bafana. But Williams exceeded expectations and went on to become a candidate for the PSL Footballer of the Season award. Not only was he immense in making some crucial saves for the club, but he was instrumental in how the club would build up from the back. A modern day goalkeeper who is comfortable on the ball, Williams would get involved in the play by giving his teammates an option to pass him the ball. His 18 clean sheets in the league, a new record, show just how important he was.

Grant Margeman (SuperSport United)

SuperSport United did well to secure Margeman on a loan move for two seasons. It guarantees that he will be there for another season after this one, instead of having to go back to Sundowns if the deal was a one-year loan. Margeman, who was named the club's Players' Player of the Season, was instrumental in the middle of the park, enjoying his game under the guidance of Gavin Hunt. His game kept on getting better and Sundowns would no doubt have been watching his progress.

Lucky Mohomi (Marumo Gallants)

Marumo Gallants might have been relegated, but the contribution of Mohomi throughout the season cannot be overlooked. This is a player who had been struggling to find a club before the start of the season, but he was given a chance and he took it with both hands. It's no surprise that he has attracted interest in the Premiership. Richards Bay are looking to bring him in for next season and it's in fact understood that he signed a pre-contract with them. Mohomi, who was named midfielder of the season at the club's awards recently, made 29 appearances in all competitions and chipped in with six assists and one goal. What a way to bounce back for the 32-year-old. He showed that he is nowhere near finished.
