Legendary Musician Thebe: Why I love Sundowns

Legendary Musician Thebe: Why I love Sundowns

Legendary musician Thebe has been a Mamelodi Sundowns supporter for over two years now and he has revealed to the Siya crew why Roger Feutmba is his all-time favourite player from the club.

Soccer Laduma spoke to the hitmaker to discuss his love for the Premiership champions.

Why and how did you start supporting Sundowns?

You know many of us start supporting teams because of family. I am from Pretoria and my dad was supporting Sundowns. That's how I started supporting Sundowns, but I was not such a big follower until later in life where my love for the game grew. This was after the Africa Cup of Nations in 1996, when Bafana Bafana won it. That's when the football bug bit me and my love for football and Sundowns grew. That's when I can say I fully started supporting Sundowns.

Who is your all-time favourite Sundowns player?

Every season, there is always a different one, but the one player who really stands out for me is Roger Feutmba. He was a special player. I loved his style of play because he was cool and he had an ability to pass the ball so well. As a avid football supporter, you always look for things that you like in a player. So, he is my favourite Sundowns player.

How did you feel recently after Sundowns lost out in the MTN8 final to Orlando Pirates?

I was disappointed, but they did not lose it in 90 minutes of play. It went to penalties, so that is always tricky. So, for me, it's okay. I didn't take it to heart so much because there is still a lot to play for. For us as Sundowns, we don't have a lot of tension and anxiety. When we usually go into a match, you think about how many goals we are going to win with.

With your busy schedule, do you ever get the chance to go to the stadium?

Yes, they invite me sometimes to the matches and I enjoy the experience. It's definitely different from watching it on television because you get the feel of the crowd. It's just electric when you are at the stadium.

After Sundowns got knocked out in the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League last season, do you think they can finally get that second star they are looking for?

They definitely have a chance. We've lost the MTN8 title, so we are looking forward to challenging for more trophies and that's one of the trophies that we want because I mean the league is in the bag, ha, ha, ha.
