Junior 'Aghahowa' Khanye remains in full support of Cavin Johnson at Kaizer Chiefs despite the team's struggles on the field with results.
Chiefs were disappointedly knocked out of the Nedbank Cup by Motsepe Foundation Championship newcomers, Milford FC to end any realistic chance of them winning a trophy this season.
Going into the final preparations of this weekend's match against Moroka Swallows, Amakhosi are 6th on the DStv Premiership log with only seven wins from 17 matches.
Khanye believes that with the right structure and enough support for Johnson, the former Al Ahly assistant coach can lead the club in the right direction.
The Good
"Cavin Johnson has done nothing wrong at Kaizer Chiefs for the team to be where they are. I think when he joined the club, the timing was not right. He found the club with players that were signed by somebody else and he didn't make decisions on his own players. The structure was already messed up when he got to the club. I feel that the club should get the right people to surround him in the technical team to try and get things right for the team. Those should be the people who share the same kind of philosophy and knowledge as him about football. Chiefs need time to work on their problems and get the structure right before things can happen for the team. Cavin Johnson is one of the best coaches ever in South Africa and I have said this repeatedly. He is in that position as interim coach, but how many coaches have been there before him and what did they achieve?" asked Khanye.
The Bad
"Looking at Chiefs' players and with Cavin Johnson working with them, does the coach's philosophy suit those players and their qualities? Somebody signed those players, and any other coach out there cannot win anything with those players. I don't really believe that Cavin didn't want to sign any players (in January). Someone must have persuaded him against it. We need to be honest about these things and someone must tell me why was (Sibongiseni) Mthethwa signed for Chiefs. A player like (Siyethemba) Sithebe can't even make the 18 (matchday squad) and you want to tell me that it was the right decision to sign him. There are players like (Jasond) Gonzalez and others, and you must tell me what they are still doing at Chiefs," he added.
The Ugly
"The problem with Chiefs is that the club is signing average players and free agents. Free agents from certain clubs can't make it at Chiefs even if they were performing for their previous teams. So, the problem at Chiefs is not Cavin Johnson, it is something else because Cavin is one of the best in the business," concluded Khanye.
How high can Chiefs finish on the log this season?
