Actress Luyanda Zwane has an interesting story to share of how the love of meat led her to becoming a supporter of Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs.
In this interview with Soccer Laduma, the Shaka iLembe actress talks about how her mother enticed her with meat to support Amakhosi.
Hi Luyanda, talk to us about how you became a supporter of Kaizer Chiefs...
I was dragged into. We were watching a game between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. I think it was in 2015 with my family. We were having a braai and they were playing together. My mother was like 'who do you support? Kaizer Chiefs or Pirates? If you say Kaizer Chiefs, then I am giving you meat for the whole night'. So, I was like 'yes, yes, yes...I support Chiefs'. That's how I got into it and we were quite obsessed with (Itumeleng) Khune for some time. That's how I was dragged into it.
That's quite interesting...it means you really love meat.
Yes, a lot. That's why I agreed to everything, ha, ha, ha.
How do you feel about the way things have been going for Chiefs ever since you started supporting them?
I am a faithful supporter and I still have hope that one day they will be able to redeem themselves. We just don't know when, but maybe if we just be a little more patient with them, then things will change. There are different seasons for different things, especially with football, or any type of sport. Some days you win, some seasons you lose. Sometimes you win the league, sometimes you don't. It's about trusting that the more new people come in and the more faith they have, even after losing, they will keep on going. We are faithful supporters, no matter what.
Have you ever been to the stadium?
I have. It was once, in 2010, for the vuvuzelas. I remember screaming when people were scoring. I remember trying to blow the vuvuzela, but I couldn't. That's all I remember. I remember the joy of South Africans at the time and the unity that came with it. I do believe that sports brings people together and you can see it with the rugby.
Do you own a Kaizer Chiefs jersey?
No, I don't. I do have a Barcelona jersey. I would want it (a Chiefs jersey) as a gift. I support Barcelona as well and that comes from watching my brothers playing FIFA (the video game). So, I have always been like 'I am a Barcelona fan' every time they would play FIFA.
Do you have an all-time favourite Chiefs player?
I'd have to say it's Khune.
