The story
Benni McCarthy's return to Mzansi and his recent involvements with SuperSport have prompted us to look back at the reality tv show he once hosted, "Goal Diggerz."
The 46-year-old's South African pop culture legacy does not start and end with his famous feature on TKZee's smash hit, "Shibobo."
Benni's season of "Goal Diggerz" offered viewers a rare inside look into the off-field lives of some of Africa's top footballers, guided by the perspective of a legendary player who had already experienced it all.
From how they prepared their favourite meals to which designer labels they preferred for nights out, the reality, interview-style show was a premium ticket into the lavish lifestyles of Africa's best ballers in the Absa Premiership era.
The show launched in 2010 and the first season was hosted by one of the show's producers, Lungile Radu (Parental Advisory Productions) and season two was fronted by actor, SK Khoza.
The first two seasons saw SA's European-based stars being showcased, featuring Steven Pienaar, Lance Davids, Bryce Moon, Bernard Parker, Kagisho Dikgacoi and Benni himself.
Former Chelsea star, Salomon Kalou and former Manchester United striker, Louis Saha also made an appearance in the first couple of seasons, with Benni interviewing Daine Klate, Steven N'zonzi, Victor Wanyama, Nasief Morris, Andile Jali and Tokelo Rantie.
"Goal Diggerz" came at the perfect time for the ex-FC Porto striker, who had from professional football when hosting season three, after a successful stint at the Buccaneers, where he scored 13 goals in 39 matches and won a domestic treble in the 2011/12 season.
