The story
Social media is abuzz in support of Bafana Bafana skipper, Ronwen Williams is currently leading the English fan voting poll for the Yashin Trophy at the Ballon d'Or awards.
Williams has made history as the first African goalkeeper to be nominated for the prestigious award while still playing on the continent.
Thousands of South Africans on social media, including Mamelodi Sundowns players and Minister of Sport, Arts Culture Gayton McKenzie, have campaigned for the goalkeeper.
Williams is boasting over 60% of the English fan votes but is struggling to make inroads on the French side that's lead by Les Bleus and AC Milan goalkeeper, Mike Maignan.
It's also worth noting the Fan polls have no bearing on the outcome of the Ballon d'Or awards as the Yashin Trophy winner will be decided by a jury of journalists representing the top 100 countries in the FIFA Men's rankings.
