The story
Following a commendable showing at the FIFA Club World Cup, Sundowns' core players not only raised the profile of South African football but also enhanced the reputation of the level of African football as a whole.
Sundowns made a strong impression on the global stage — earning a draw against Brazilian champions Fluminense, narrowly falling 4-3 to European giants Borussia Dortmund, and securing a 1-0 victory over South Korea's Ulsan Hyundai.
These performances caught international attention and further elevated the club's growing reputation beyond the African continent.
Speaking in a pre-Club World Cup interview with The Athletic, coach Miguel Cardoso and stars, Themba Zwane, Teboho Mokoena, Grant Kekena, and Denis Onyango all had their say on the common misconceptions regarding African football.
Mokoena touched on how Africa has produced plenty of talent that's currently flourishing in Europe, while Cardoso spoke on the tactical and technical quality of African-based football.
Onyango mentioned how non-Africans might not know how the beautiful game has evolved in Africa, with Kekana shining a light on how quickly the game is growing on the continent, using the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations as an example.
