The story

Bundesliga side FC Augsburg are still enjoying their stay in South Africa, with Mzansi being their first pre-season training camp outside Europe.

The German club arrived last Thursday and played a friendly match against Young Africans (Yanga) of Tanzania on Saturday in the Mpumalanga Premier's International Cup at Mbombela Stadium.

Augsburg's trip to the place where the sun rises goes beyond them just wanting to sharpen their tools for the upcoming 2024/25 season, they've made plans to give back to communities in Mpumalanga.

Die Fuggerstädter had an unforgettable morning on Thursday to visit learners from Cyril Clarke Secondary School and nearby John Mdluli Primary in Mbombela.

Hundreds of pupils assembled on the school grounds to give the Augsburg players and staff a warm welcome at both schools, a day the students won't forget in a hurry.

Augsburg players and coaching staff led the children in several activities with players Arne Maier, Niklas Dorsch and others playing some football with the learners, while Steve Mounié and Felix Uduokhai performed dance routines with them, according to the club's press release.

The German side also helped set up and support the "Football4WASH" initiative in Mbombela, in collaboration with Viva con Agua (a charity passionate about providing clean drinking water and basic sanitation), a project that will serve the children in the Mbombela area on a long-term basis.

"The educational project for children and young people links the topics of water, sanitation and hygiene with football training drills. The German Football League (DFL) and local club TS Galaxy are also supporting the project. To kick off Football4WASH, FCA and Viva con Agua South Africa led the first workshop at Cyril Clarke Secondary School," stated the Bundesliga outfit in another press release, published on their club website, adding:

"At 'Football4WASH', football training drills are intertwined with sharing information about the key themes of WASH, which stands for water, sanitation and hygiene. Together with a holistic approach, this triad is necessary in order to ensure clean drinking water. However, in the Mpumalanga province, access to these three components is not always guaranteed.

"The school workshops strive to raise awareness to children and young for the correct behavioural patterns in a playful way, which will enable them to live a healthier life and improve local living conditions in the long term."
