The story
Banyana Banyana icon Portia Modise has urged South Africa's male football legends to show more support for the women's game.
Speaking on the iDiski Dine podcast with OBI Knows and Happy Jele, Modise highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by women in football, stressing that greater backing from their male counterparts could significantly boost the growth of the sport in the country.
During the podcast, Modise expressed her admiration for legendary players such as Doctor Khumalo, the late John Moshoeu, Edward "Magents" Motale, Emmanuel Ngobese, and Happy Jele himself. She mentioned that she often speaks about these icons in interviews, acknowledging their influence and achievements.
However, she pointed out a concerning lack of reciprocity, noting that many of these same legends do not extend similar acknowledgement or support to women's football.
As the first African footballer to score 100 international goals, Modise brings a powerful voice to the conversation, and stated, "I want to challenge the guys I grew up watching Jele, Magents [Edward Motale], Doctor Khumalo, Shoes Moshoeu, Jabu Pule [Mahlangu], I grew up watching them because they were our role models.
"We spoke about these dudes in our interviews, but they don't speak about women's football. You need to start with them. I'm asking the guys to support us, as their sisters, they shouldn't make it seem as if this game only belongs to them; they must make space for us and feel our pain," she added.
