The story
Social media is abuzz amid Abdeslam Ouaddou's appointment as Orlando Pirates' new head coach, with his distinguished playing career coming to the fore on the Twitter/X timeline.
Born in Alnif, Morocco, Ouaddou donned the Atlas Lions national team jersey 68 times, making him the 14th most-capped player in his country’s history.
Ouaddou comes with European football pedigree to the Buccaneers, having plied his trade in England, France, Greece and Qatar and as pointed out by the club’s statement on the former centre-back's hiring, "His deep understanding of the game, coupled with a strong leadership profile, positions him well to lead the Buccaneers into a new era."
Ouaddou kick-started his career at AC Nancy before making a career-changing move when he signed for English Premier League side Fulham in 2001.
The lanky Moroccan was on the books for four years at Fulham, winning the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2002 before returning to France to play for Stade Rennais.
He also lifted the Greek Super League title with Olympiacos. Ouaddou enjoyed stints at Valenciennes, and Qatari outfits Lekhwiya SC and Qatar SC before hanging up his boots in 2013.
