The 2025 Engen Knockout Challenge, Gauteng leg, delivered drama, flair and two brand-new champions, as both Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies saw their title reigns come to a sudden end.
Panorama FC, one of the tournament's most exciting dark horses, etched their name into history by defeating defending champions Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 in a pulsating boys' U18 final at Wits Marks Park.
Scenes of pure emotion erupted at full-time, as the Panorama bench cleared and players flooded the pitch in celebration of their first-ever Gauteng EKO Challenge title.
Their fairytale run was anchored by the brilliance of Tiago Kahn, who scooped up both the Defender and Player of the Tournament awards, while Neo Maswabi’s clinical form earned him the Striker of the Tournament.
Coach Boy Gcabashe also received top honours for masterminding the club’s run to glory, taking home the Coach of the Tournament award.
Chiefs, despite falling short in the final, saw young Andile Mtsweni walk away with the Midfielder of the Tournament award, while Mihailo Mijatovic of Joburg City was named Goalkeeper of the Tournament.
In the girls' U20 final, it was the University of Johannesburg who rose to the occasion, overcoming a resilient JVW side in a tightly-contested showdown. UJ’s mix of composure and energy saw them break through the resistance and lift the trophy, signaling a new power shift in the women’s competition.
The standout performers in the women’s division were also recognised:
-
Goalkeeper of the Tournament: Casey Gordon (JVW)
-
Defender of the Tournament: Naylene Morgan (SAFA Academy)
-
Midfielder of the Tournament: Adrielle Mibe (UJ)
