If Your Dreams Scare You, You’re On Track

If Your Dreams Scare You, You’re On Track

From her early days at Barberton Community Radio to her current role as a vibrant voice on RISE FM, Princess Mobeng has shown that passion, persistence, and purpose can take you from community airwaves to national stages.

Soccer Laduma sat down with Princess, who outlines how her milestone as the first Engen Sportscaster is more than just a career highlight, but a platform to inspire other young women to dream boldly and claim their space in sport and media.

Q: What message do you think it sends to a younger version of yourself, and to other young women looking up to you?

A: For me, this journey is about inspiring others by sharing my story and being an example to young people - especially girls. It’s a reminder that you don’t have to be on the field of play to have a future in the sporting industry. You can be on the sidelines, like me, and still live out your dream.

This opportunity has allowed me to keep doing what I love most: inspiring young people to believe in themselves. And for that, I’m truly grateful.

Q: You’ve worked so hard to carve out your space in broadcasting, and now you’ve entered a new chapter through sports presenting. What impact do you hope your role as Engen sportscaster has, not only on your own journey, but also on others who are watching you and aspire to follow in your footsteps?

A: For me, it’s all about inspiring and planting a seed in young people - especially young women, but also young men. I want them to see that if they work hard and grab opportunities when they come, they can achieve their dreams.

What I’d really love is to mentor aspiring Engen Sportscasters, even if it’s just giving them the chance to shadow us for a day. At this year’s Engen Knockout Challenge in Joburg, I had a beautiful moment that reminded me why this matters. A young lady reached out to me on Instagram, saying she knew I’d be in town and wanted to meet. To my surprise, she showed up, joined us, and got to sit with me, Thabiso, and Brighton. Her passion for sports broadcasting was so genuine - you could see it in her face when she spoke about her dreams.

Moments like that mean everything. Giving young people the chance to spend just a couple of hours with us - to see how things work, learn the technical side, and feel the energy up close -gives them hope. It shows them that if I can do it, they can too.

If opening my arms and saying, “Hey, come through, even just for a day,” sparks something in them, then I’ve made a meaningful impact. And I definitely want to do more of that.

Q: Finally, Princess, there’s a young girl out there right now, maybe still in school or varsity, with the same passion for sports and presenting that you had. What’s your message to her as she chases her dreams, especially in light of Women’s Month?

A:

If your dreams scare you, you’re on the right track. Every day, put in the effort to shape your own future. There will be seasons of hard work and seasons where that work pays off. Both are equally important.

Stay focused, don’t lose sight of your goal, and keep believing in yourself. Humility and a teachable spirit will take you further than you can imagine. With focus, belief, and openness to learn, you’ll reach the top.
