Orlando Pirates legend, Gavin 'Stability Unit' Lane, has shared his fondest memories of Bucs' CAF Champions League winning campaign of 1995.
CAF hopes on Pirates shoulders
The former defender took some time to share the significant moments with the Siya crew which led to the Soweto giants clinching Africa's top intercontinental club accolade and, to provide some words of inspiration and advice to the current crop of players who don the black and white of the Ghost.
"It's a lot tougher nowadays to harvest that team spirit among the players. Back in our days a squad was made up of 20 odd players, nowadays squads have 30-35 players which makes it difficult to form relationships," explained the Bucs legend.
"Also the constant moving of players adds to this. I remember when we used to play we would defend each other 'to the death'. If another player kicked one of us he would be a target for all of us, there was a unity that came from being part of a smaller squad."
"Obviously the game has changed since our days but people are still talking about what we achieved. There were moments where we were intimidated, but we would not be scared because we had each other," further noted Lane.
"Eric Tinkler is an experienced player who has played all over the world so he will know how to prepare his players accordingly. When they play on Saturday they will have to play for each other because that's all they will have against their opposition," concluded the Bucs legend.
