Champions Banyana Advance To WAFCON Semis!

Reigning champions Banyana Banyana advanced to the Women's Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals after defeating Senegal on penalties on Saturday night.

Banyana coach Desiree Ellis made one change from the big win over Mali on Monday, as Sibulele Holweni came in for Amogelang Motau, who dropped to the bench.

Senegal nearly took the lead inside three minutes when Nguenar Ndiaye was slipped through on goal, but goalkeeper Andile Dlamini stood firm made the save in a one-on-one situation.

Banyana nearly took the lead after 21 minutes as Ndèye Casset tried playing out from the back and gifted the ball to Jermaine Seoposenwe, however the Senegalese goalkeeper was able to redeem herself and make the block in the box.

The Senegalese managed to hold their own as the first half went on and they were able to carve out another opening on 37 minutes when the ball dropped kindly for Haby Balde, who sent her first-time volley wide of the target in the box.

After a scoreless first half, Ellis made here first change just before the hour mark as Holweni made way for Motau in an attempt to freshen up the attack.

Motau looked to break the deadlock for the South Africans after 77 minutes when she spotted Balde off her line, but the Senegalese goalkeeper was able to recover and save the ambitious effort from distance.

That proved to be the final clear-cut opening of the second period, as neither nation were able to carve out another chance, which ultimately sent the clash to extra-time.

Banyana had the ball in the back of the net eight minutes into extra-time through Lebohang Ramalepe's composed finish, but the celebrations were cut short after she was flagged for offside.

The game would eventually be decided in a penalty shoot-out, where Banyana held their nerve to triumph 4-1, with Dlamini pulling off two saves in the process.
