Van Wyk On The Brink Of History As Banyana Clinch Away Goal

Van Wyk On The Brink Of History As Banyana Clinch Away Goal

Janine Van Wyk made her record-equalling 184th appearance for Banyana Banyana, who secured a 1-1 draw away to Burkina Faso in the first leg of their 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Thursday.

Veteran defender Janine van Wyk was handed a start and captained the side, which saw her equal Egypt legend Ahmed Hassan's record of 184 international appearances.

Desire Ellis' charges were given a bye in the first round of qualifiers, while Burkina Faso overcame Eswatini in the previous round with  a 6-2 aggregate victory.

The South Africans had the ball in the back of the net after 38 minutes through Thembi Kgatlana's effort, but celebrations were cut short as the goal was ruled out for an offside.

A minute later, Van Wyk's record-equalling appearance came to an end, with the veteran defender making way for Kholosa Biyana for the latter stages of the first half.

The African champions went on to get the breakthrough nine minutes after the halftime break courtesy of a strike from Hildah Magaia's powerful strike from distance, giving Ellis' charges an away goal.

The home side did manage to level matters after 68 minutes, just five minutes after substitute Biyana hit the frame of the goal for the away side at the other end.

With time running for the South Africans to find a winner, Ellis made a change for the final latter stages as Kgatlana made way for Gabriela Salgado in the final seven minutes.

That late changes were unable to change the reflection of the score but South Africa do have an away goal take to the second leg, which is scheduled for Monday, 4 December at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.
