Result: Tanzania 0-3 South Africa
Date: 23 February 2024
Venue: AZAM Complex
South Africa overcome the Democratic Republic of Congo in the previous round of qualifiers, while the Tanzanians defeated Togo 3-2 on aggregate.
The two nations have not met over a ten years in competitive action, with their last meeting coming in an international friendly in 2014 that ended in a 6-1 win for Banyana at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.
The African champions got off to the perfect start when Jermaine Seoponsenwe opened the scoring after ten minutes with a first-time finish, after being set up by Hildah Magaia.
South Africa had a chance to double their advantage five minutes before the halftime break, but Kgatlana saw her strike palmed away by the Tanzania goalkeeper, while Matlou blasted over from the rebound.
Desiree Ellis' troop carried the dominance over the second period and doubled the lead on 57 minutes when Kgatlana was played in on the right side of the box, before firing into the far corner.
Tanzania, meanwhile, were unable to provide a serious threat at the Banyana goal, with goalkeeper Kaylin Swart barely needed to make a save throughout the second period.
The visitors went on to grab a third goal with five minutes left on the clock, as Magaia added her name to the score-sheet with a clinical finish from a tight angle to wrap up a good win.
The South Africans will look to finish the job in the second leg at the Mbombela Stadium on Tuesday.
